What to buy

Buy 40.5 kg of wheat seed for your 1 acre — that's 40.5 kg/acre. Your seed quality matches the recommended basis, so no extra is needed.

Next: buy certified seed, do a quick germination test to confirm the rate, and treat seed before sowing. Pair with the spacing calculator to check plant population.

How seed rate is calculated

Each crop has a recommended seed rate in kilograms per hectare, based on its target plant population, seed size and sowing method. Multiply that by your field's area in hectares to get the baseline quantity. But recommended rates assume good seed — about 90% germination and 98% purity — so if your seed is poorer you must sow more: the tool divides by your germination and purity to scale the quantity up, ensuring you still reach a full, even stand.

This matters because under-seeding leaves gaps and wastes land, while over-seeding wastes money and crowds plants. Getting the rate right for your seed and method is one of the cheapest ways to protect yield.

Wheat seed rate per acre

Wheat needs about 100 kg/ha (~40 kg/acre) for timely line-sown crops; broadcasting or late sowing needs more — the tool adjusts for your germination.

Paddy / rice seed rate

Transplanted rice needs ~20–25 kg/ha of nursery seed; direct-seeded rice ~60–80 kg/ha. Choose the method to get the right figure.

Seed rate with poor germination

Tested your seed at 70%? The calculator scales the quantity up by ~90/70 so a weak lot still gives a full stand.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate seed rate per acre?+

Multiply the recommended seed rate (kg per hectare) by your area in hectares, then divide by germination rate and seed purity to allow for losses. For example, wheat at 100 kg/ha is about 40.5 kg per acre with good seed; this tool does it for any crop, area and seed quality.

What is the seed rate of wheat per acre?+

Wheat's recommended rate is about 100 kg per hectare, which is roughly 40 kg per acre for good-quality, timely-sown seed. Late sowing or broadcasting needs more; with poor germination the tool scales the figure up automatically.

What is the seed rate of rice (paddy)?+

For transplanted rice you raise a nursery from about 20–25 kg of seed per hectare of final field; for direct-seeded rice it's around 60–80 kg/ha. Select the right method in the calculator.

What is the seed rate of maize, soybean and cotton?+

Typical rates are maize ~20 kg/ha, soybean ~75 kg/ha and cotton ~15–20 kg/ha. Pick the crop and the calculator converts it to your area and adjusts for your seed's germination and purity.

How does germination rate affect seed quantity?+

Lower germination means more seeds fail to emerge, so you must sow more. The recommended rate assumes ~90% germination; if yours is 70%, you need about 90/70 ≈ 1.29× more seed to reach the same plant stand.

What is seed purity and why does it matter?+

Seed purity is the percentage that is the pure, intended seed (not chaff, weed seed or other crops). Lower purity means part of what you buy won't grow your crop, so the required quantity rises. The recommended rate assumes ~98% purity.

Can I calculate seed cost?+

Yes — enter your seed price per kilogram and pick a currency, and the tool multiplies it by the required quantity to show your total seed cost for the field.

Does sowing method change the seed rate?+

Yes. Line-sowing or drilling uses less seed than broadcasting; transplanting (rice, vegetables) needs only nursery seed; and wider or closer spacing changes the rate. Use the recommended rate as a baseline and adjust for your method.

What units can I use?+

Acre, hectare, bigha, guntha, square metres or square feet. Note bigha varies regionally; this tool uses a common North-India pucca bigha (~2,529 m²).

Is more seed always better?+

No. Over-seeding wastes money and causes overcrowding, competition and disease, often lowering yield and quality. Aim for the recommended rate adjusted for your seed quality, not the maximum.
