Everything about the Image to GIF Converter

GIF, the Graphics Interchange Format, dates all the way back to 1987 and remains instantly recognisable as the format of looping animations and reaction clips. Technically it is limited to a 256-colour palette per frame and uses lossless LZW compression, with a single transparent colour rather than a full alpha channel. Those limits make it a poor fit for photographs, but a perfectly good one for short, low-colour animations, simple logos and pixel art.

Converting to GIF is mostly about animation and universal playback. A GIF plays automatically and loops everywhere, with no video player, codec or click required, which is why it is still the lingua franca of memes, tutorials and quick how-to loops in chat apps and documentation. For static graphics with few colours, GIF also produces tidy, sharp files, though for anything photographic or richly coloured PNG, WebP or JPEG will look far better at a smaller size.

Our GIF converter works in the browser with no account and no watermark, converting single files or batches and offering individual downloads or one combined ZIP. When you need richer colour or smoother motion than GIF allows, consider WebP or APNG, both of which keep full colour and proper transparency while staying smaller. For maximum reach and instant autoplay across old and new platforms alike, though, classic GIF is still hard to beat.
