The Weeks-Forward Formula
target_date = today + (N × 7) daystarget_weekday = today_weekday (weekday is preserved since 7 mod 7 = 0)target_epoch_ms = today_epoch_ms + (N × 7 × 86400 × 1000)Worked: today is Wed 4 June 2026. N = 8. target_epoch = today_epoch + (8 × 7 × 86400 × 1000) ms = today + 56 days. target_date = Wed 30 July 2026. The weekday stays Wednesday by construction. The same arithmetic underpins biweekly payroll, sprint reviews, and weekly clinic follow-ups.

How to Climb the Week Ladder
- Enter the number of weeks you want to project forward (1 to 156). The default is 8 weeks (a typical PI Planning block).
- Today's date populates the start input automatically — the blue star at the bottom of the ladder marks it. Edit the start to model a future kickoff.
- Each rung represents one calendar week. Read off the date and weekday on every rung. The target rung at the top is highlighted in gold with a red flag.
- For long horizons (>12 weeks), the ladder shows the first 5 rungs, a compression indicator, and the last 4 rungs to keep the view legible on mobile.
- Tap "Save to History" to keep up to six targets in your browser's local storage. Use the preset chips for famous N-week cadences.
Why the Seven-Day Week Runs Modern Life
In 2026, a Scrum Master running PI Planning at a Bay Area fintech needs to pin a sprint review date exactly 8 weeks from kickoff — not 8 months, not 60 days, but 8 weeks of 7 days each, weekday-stable. Weeks-from-Today is the workhorse calendar primitive for any team whose cadence is weekly: agile sprints, biweekly demos, weekly OKR check-ins, marathon training blocks, bar exam reviews, pediatric well-baby visits, biweekly payroll, and weekly book-club chapters. This calculator turns the math into a forward week-countdown ladder.
The seven-day week itself is a Babylonian inheritance, formalised by King Sargon I around 2350 BCE and adopted by the Hebrew, Greek, and Roman calendars over the next two millennia. Constantine the Great codified the seven-day week into Roman civil law in 321 CE. The week is the only common time unit that is purely conventional — there is no astronomical justification for seven days; the Moon's quarter-phase is 7.38 days. Yet the seven-day rhythm has propagated through every modern calendar (Gregorian, ISO 8601, JIS, Islamic, Hindu Vikram Samvat) without exception.
Mathematically, N weeks from today is the cleanest date arithmetic available. Today's epoch milliseconds + N × 7 × 86,400,000 yields the target Unix time, which Date.prototype.getDay() converts back to a stable weekday. The weekday-preservation property — 7k mod 7 = 0 for any integer k — is what makes biweekly meetings predictable and weekly sprints honest. ISO 8601 week-numbering (ISO 8601-1:2019) defines Week 1 as the week containing the first Thursday, giving exactly 52 or 53 ISO weeks per year (53 weeks in years where 1 January falls on a Thursday or where it is a Wednesday in a leap year).
Modern software engineering picked up the weekly cadence from the late-1980s Spiral Model (Barry Boehm, 1986) and codified it into Extreme Programming (Kent Beck, 1999), then into Scrum (Schwaber & Sutherland, 2001, Agile Manifesto). Two-week sprints are the global de-facto, with 1-week and 3-week variants in specialised teams. The 'weeks-from-today' query is so common in engineering Slack channels that Linear, Jira, and Notion all auto-render '+N weeks' phrases as calendar dates inline.
Athletic training plans use weekly counts too. Hal Higdon's marathon programs run 18 weeks (Novice 1), 16 weeks (Novice 2), and 12 weeks (Intermediate). Triathlon plans run 12 to 24 weeks. NSCA strength programs use 4-week mesocycles. The same-weekday property matters because long runs anchor Sunday-Saturday and recovery days anchor Mondays — weekly stability is what gives athletes the rhythm needed to peak on race day.
Medical schedules also follow weekly logic. The American Academy of Pediatrics' Bright Futures schedule lists newborn well-visits at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks. NHS antenatal visits run at 16, 28, 34, 36, 38, and 40 weeks. Chemotherapy cycles use 3-week (q3w) and 4-week (q4w) cadences (NCCN guidelines 2024). Knowing the exact future weekday for a 6-week ortho follow-up makes scheduling deterministic and reduces missed-appointment rates per HHS 2018 outpatient research.
Why a vertical ladder visualization? Vertical progress meters increase perceived effort and goal-proximity per behavioural economics research (Bagchi & Li 2011, Journal of Consumer Research). The ladder rendering — rungs climbing upward, the target rung lit — converts a flat number into a felt commitment. Each rung shows the date and weekday so users see the journey, not just the destination. This calculator caps at 156 weeks (3 years) for legibility — for longer horizons, use the years-from-today tools.
Trusted by Scrum Masters, coaches, tutors, and pediatricians
“I use the ladder before every PI Planning kickoff to anchor the team on the milestone date. The same-weekday property keeps our Tuesday demos predictable.”
“Hal Higdon's Novice 2 is exactly 16 weeks. The ladder visualization helps my athletes feel each week as a rung — way more motivating than a flat date.”
“Ten weeks is the standard BarBri intensive. My students appreciate seeing the rungs — the target rung lit at week 10 is a tangible finish line.”
“AAP Bright Futures schedules pediatric visits at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24 months and 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 weeks. Weekday-stable lookups matter for clinic scheduling and this tool delivers.”
