How to Use the Speed Gauge
- Run a real speed test at speedtest.net or fast.com from a wired ethernet connection. Note the download Mbps figure (not the upload, not the latency).
- Type that Mbps into the input or drag the slider. The yellow needle on the gauge moves logarithmically across the 1 Mbps to 5 Gbps dial.
- Scan the file-bucket grid — instant download times for 1 GB, 4K movie, AAA Steam game, Photoshop, macOS, Windows, podcast, RAW photos.

A Brief History of Internet Download Speed
The relationship between internet speed and file-download time is one of the most asked-about queries in personal computing. The fundamental formula — time = file_size_bits ÷ link_speed_bits_per_second — looks simple, but everyday users routinely conflate bits and bytes, decimal and binary prefixes, and theoretical link speed with practical throughput. The widget below resolves all three ambiguities in real time and shows the result on a needle gauge that pivots between neon cyan (slow) and deep purple (gigabit-class).
The bit-versus-byte distinction matters because internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps), while file sizes are measured in megabytes or gigabytes (MB/GB). One byte is 8 bits, so a 1 Gbps fiber line theoretically downloads 125 MB per second, not 1 GB per second. A 1 GB file therefore takes 8 seconds at gigabit (1 GB × 8 = 8 Gb, ÷ 1 Gbps = 8 s). The convention was set by the IEEE 802 working group standards (1980 onwards) which standardised network speeds in bits, while ISO/IEC 80000-13 (2008) codified the binary prefixes (1 GiB = 1024³ bytes) that diverge slightly from the decimal SI prefixes used by storage manufacturers.
Practical throughput is always lower than advertised line speed. The FCC's 2024 Measuring Broadband America report found that median actual throughput for major US ISPs is about 90% of advertised speeds for cable and 95% for fiber. Latency, TCP windowing, ISP throttling, peering bottlenecks, and home Wi-Fi all reduce the practical number. The widget allows users to manually dial in a real-world Mbps figure rather than assume the marketing-deck speed.
The history of consumer internet speed is staggering. The first commercial dial-up modems shipped in 1979 at 300 bps (Hayes Smartmodem). The 56k V.90 modem standard (1998) capped at 53 kbps. ADSL (1999) delivered 1.5 Mbps. The first FiOS fiber-to-the-home rolled out in 2005 at 5 Mbps. Google Fiber's 1 Gbps service launched in Kansas City in 2012. As of 2026, 2.5 Gbps and 10 Gbps residential fiber are commercially available in major US, UK, Japanese, and South Korean cities. File sizes have grown in parallel. A typical AAA video game install was 4 GB in 2010 (Mass Effect 2), 30 GB in 2015 (Witcher 3), and 75-150 GB in 2026 (Baldur's Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077 + Phantom Liberty, GTA VI). A 4K Blu-ray movie is 50-100 GB raw and 20-40 GB after HEVC re-encode. Adobe Photoshop has grown from 200 MB in 2010 to 24 GB in 2026 with AI generative-fill model weights. Macroscopically, file sizes have outpaced consumer broadband speeds by roughly 2x per decade.
Wi-Fi router speed is often the bottleneck rather than the ISP plan. Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax, 2019) supports up to 9.6 Gbps theoretical on tri-band, but typical throughput per device is 600-800 Mbps. Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be, 2024) raises the theoretical ceiling to 46 Gbps. For real-world households, the gigabit-fiber-to-Wi-Fi-6 path typically delivers about 500-700 Mbps to a laptop in the same room and 200-400 Mbps two walls away.
