India UK Time — Live Converter

India is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of the United Kingdom in winter, and 4 hours 30 minutes ahead in summer. The two analog clocks below tick live, the DST-aware offset chip flips automatically twice a year, and the meeting matrix tells you when Bengaluru and London can both stay inside office hours.

The Offset Formula

offset(d) = IST_offset - UK_offset(d)IST_offset = +5h30 (constant since 1971)UK_offset(d) = +0h if GMT, +1h if BST (last Sun Mar 01:00 UTC to last Sun Oct 01:00 UTC)

Worked example for 15 January 2026 (GMT): offset = +5h30 - 0h = +5h30. A 9:00 AM London call = 9:00 + 5h30 = 2:30 PM IST. Worked example for 15 July 2026 (BST): offset = +5h30 - 1h = +4h30. A 9:00 AM London call = 9:00 + 4h30 = 1:30 PM IST.

How to read the dual-flag clocks

  1. Glance at both analog clocks. The Indian face on the left is always 5h30 or 4h30 ahead of the British face on the right.
  2. Read the Offset chip. If it shows +5h30, the UK is on GMT; +4h30 means BST.
  3. Use the meeting matrix to find a fit-great row that suits both teams. Green = both inside 9-17 local.
  4. For a one-off conversion, type a UK hour into the Quick Conversion strip and click Calculate.
  5. Save the snapshot before the BST switch in late March or late October to track the shift.

A Brief History of India Time and UK Time

In 2026, an NRI engineering manager at a London fintech runs three standups across two time zones: one with her Bengaluru platform team, one with the New York compliance squad, and one with the Edinburgh data crew. Every March and October the United Kingdom flips between Greenwich Mean Time (GMT, UTC+0) and British Summer Time (BST, UTC+1), and the rolling difference with India Standard Time (IST, UTC+5:30) shifts from five and a half hours to four and a half hours. That single hour decides whether her 9 AM London standup catches the Bengaluru team before lunch or in the middle of it. The India UK Time tool exists to take that uncertainty out of every diary invite.

India Standard Time is anchored to the meridian passing through Shankargarh Fort in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh — 82°30' east of Greenwich, exactly five and a half hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. The half-hour offset originated when the Indian Railway Conference in 1905 adopted a single national time to replace the older Bombay Time (UTC+4:51) and Calcutta Time (UTC+5:54). After Independence on 15 August 1947 the offset was retained, and India briefly used a one-hour daylight saving shift during the 1962 China war and the 1965 and 1971 Pakistan wars. Since then, India has rejected seasonal time changes and IST runs continuously at UTC+5:30.

Britain's clock has a richer scheduling history. The Standard Time Act of 1880 fixed Greenwich Mean Time as the legal time of the United Kingdom, replacing dozens of local times each pinned to a town hall sundial. The Summer Time Act of 1916, championed by builder William Willett, introduced British Summer Time — Willett died in 1915 and never saw the first BST Sunday. During the Second World War the UK ran on British Double Summer Time (UTC+2) to extend wartime daylight, returning to BST in 1947. Today BST starts at 01:00 UTC on the last Sunday of March and ends at 01:00 UTC on the last Sunday of October, governed by the Summer Time Order 2002 and aligned with the EU's former Directive 2000/84/EC.

The practical effect for India-UK travellers and remote workers is a 5h30 difference from late October to late March, and a 4h30 difference from late March to late October. A London 9 AM call becomes 2:30 PM in winter and 1:30 PM in summer for the Indian counterpart — and the four extra hours of overlap during BST are the reason most India-UK product launches schedule design reviews in the May to September window. Pilots flying London Heathrow to Delhi Indira Gandhi International cross the local clock by either 4 or 5 hours depending on the season, on top of the roughly 9-hour flight time.

Phone, Skype, Zoom, and WhatsApp all assume the operating system clock is correct. None of them surface the source of the discrepancy when an invite lands at an inconvenient hour. The Internet Engineering Task Force's RFC 5545 (iCalendar) and the IANA Time Zone Database (tzdata) released roughly four updates a year between 2017 and 2025, but the database simply records observed transitions — it does not warn a London user that India does not observe DST. The India UK Time tool surfaces the relationship: two live clocks side by side, a single offset chip, and a meeting overlap grid that turns the abstract math into a calendar decision.

Cross-border trade between India and the United Kingdom totalled over £42 billion in 2024 and is forecast to exceed £50 billion under the 2025 India-UK Free Trade Agreement. Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech, Tech Mahindra and L&T Mindtree each run multi-thousand-person delivery centres in both countries; the BPO and IT services corridor between Bengaluru and London is the world's densest by minute-of-spoken-time. The Confederation of Indian Industry recommends three windows for cross-corridor meetings — 09:30-11:00 GMT, 13:00-14:30 GMT, and 15:30-17:00 GMT — all of which fall inside the 09:30-22:30 IST overlap. The tool's meeting matrix is built on the same overlap heuristics.

For Indians living in the UK, the half-hour offset also adds a small administrative tax. Indian banking apps (HDFC Net Banking, ICICI iMobile, SBI Yono) display IST timestamps in transaction logs; UK utilities and HMRC display GMT/BST. Reconciling a Diwali bonus deposit at 03:42 IST against a London bank statement at 22:12 GMT requires either mental arithmetic or this tool. The Royal Observatory in Greenwich and the National Physical Laboratory at Teddington both maintain UTC-traceable clocks; the Indian National Physical Laboratory at Delhi maintains IST traceable to the same UTC second. The two clocks shown on this page are derived from the user's device clock relative to UTC, which is sufficient for everyday scheduling and within a few seconds of either national standard.

I run standups across London and Bengaluru year-round and BST always catches me out. The dual flag clock with the auto offset chip is exactly what my Outlook calendar should have shipped with.

Half-hour offsets are the bane of my Friday afternoons. The visual analog clocks anchor it for me — I see Big Ben at 4 PM and the India Gate clock at 9:30 PM and I do not need to do mental sums on a Bombay arbitration call.

We use the meeting overlap grid for chauffeur scheduling on Heathrow-Delhi arrivals. The fit chips (great, ok, tough) save my team the arithmetic. Outstanding for a free tool.

The DST aware offset chip alone is worth bookmarking. Twice a year my team forgets BST and double books the daily handover — not since we put this in the Confluence header.
