How the date is calculated
if (first new moon ≥ minor-cold solar term && before major-cold) → that new moon is CNY
Worked example: Winter solstice 2025 falls on Sunday 21 December 2025 at 23:03 UTC+8. The first new moon after is 30 December 2025 (Tuesday); the second new moon is 17 February 2026 — that is Chinese New Year 2026, opening the Year of the Fire Horse. The countdown above ticks against that midnight UTC+8 boundary.

How to use this countdown
- 1Watch the lantern. The hanging red lantern above the page shows days, hours, minutes, and seconds counting down to the next Spring Festival in real time.
- 2Jump to a year. Click any year chip (2024-2035) to switch the lantern to that specific Chinese New Year — useful for remembering the zodiac of a birth year.
- 3Note the zodiac & element. The medallion at the base shows the animal (Horse, Goat, Monkey…) and Five-Phase element (Fire, Earth, Metal…) — the full Heavenly Stem & Earthly Branch combo.
- 4Cross-reference the table. The 2024-2035 table shows the exact Gregorian date and weekday for every upcoming CNY — handy for booking flights during Chunyun.

The lunisolar calendar that sets Spring Festival
In 2026, a Beijing-based travel coordinator booking the Chunyun travel window for 3.1 billion expected trips needs to know precisely when Chinese New Year falls, what zodiac year it opens, and how the Heavenly Stems align with the Earthly Branches. The Spring Festival countdown above answers that question against the same lunisolar algorithm the Hong Kong Observatory publishes for the official Chinese calendar — the second new moon after the winter solstice, evaluated at UTC+8.
The Chinese calendar is properly called lunisolar — it tracks both the synodic lunar month (~29.53 days) and the solar tropical year (~365.24 days). The modern algorithm in use was codified in 1645 under the Shixian calendar of the Qing dynasty by Johann Adam Schall von Bell (a Jesuit astronomer) and refined by Xu Guangqi. It uses 24 jieqi (solar terms) anchored to the sun's ecliptic longitude, of which the winter solstice (Dongzhi, 冬至) is the most important pivot. CNY is the second new moon after Dongzhi — almost always falling between 21 January and 20 February.
The 12-animal zodiac cycle (生肖, shēngxiào) — Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig — is attested in the Han dynasty tomb-finds at Shuihudi (4th-3rd century BCE) and described in the Lunheng of Wang Chong (1st century CE). Each animal repeats every 12 years. Layered on top is the Wu Xing — the Five Phases: Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金), Water (水). The combination of 12 animals and 10 Heavenly Stems (each element in yin/yang form) produces the 60-year sexagenary cycle (六十甲子, liùshí jiǎzǐ).
Each cycle position has a name: Jia-Zi (1984), Yi-Chou (1985), and so on through Gui-Hai (2043, the 60th). 2025 is Yi-Si (Wood Snake), 2026 is Bing-Wu (Fire Horse), 2027 is Ding-Wei (Fire Goat). The combined name is what fortune-tellers, BaZi practitioners, and date-selection astrologers use — it's denser than the animal-alone shorthand most Western media uses. The 2027 year is Ding Wei, the Fire Goat.
Chunyun (春运) is the 40-day Spring Festival travel period — officially 15 days before CNY through 25 days after. The Ministry of Transport tracks roughly 3.0-3.1 billion trips during this window in recent years, making it the largest annual human migration on the planet. Travel agents, airlines (CAAC, Air China, China Eastern), and rail operators (CR High Speed Rail) open booking windows roughly 60 days ahead — which is exactly the countdown horizon for someone looking at this lantern between mid-December and CNY day.
The 15-day festival period itself runs from CNY Day through the Lantern Festival (元宵节, Yuánxiāo Jié) on the 15th of the first lunar month. Key milestones include the family reunion dinner on CNY Eve (除夕, Chúxī), the firecracker ritual at midnight, the temple visits on Day 1, returning to the wife's parents on Day 2, the welcoming of the God of Wealth on Day 5, and the Lantern Festival on Day 15. The Lantern Festival is when red lanterns — like the one on this page — are hung in public spaces, marking the formal close of the new-year period.
Outside mainland China, the lunisolar new year is observed as Tết Nguyên Đán in Vietnam (same algorithm, occasionally one day off due to UTC+7), Seollal in Korea, Tsagaan Sar in Mongolia, and Losar in Tibet (with a different astronomy). The inclusive English term is "Lunar New Year"; the specifically Han-Chinese framing is "Chinese New Year" or, more accurately, "Spring Festival." In Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia — with significant Chinese diaspora populations — it is a statutory public holiday.
What lunar-calendar planners say
“I plan the SF Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade every year. Having a clean, accurate lantern countdown with the correct zodiac for 2025-2035 saves me from re-checking the HKO almanac each booking call.”
“My students learn the 12-animal cycle and the five elements much faster when they can see the next Spring Festival ticking down with the matching zodiac glyph. The 春 character on the lantern is a nice cultural touch.”
“Chunyun is the busiest travel window of the year for our China desk. The 2025-2035 reference table is the exact horizon I plan against, and the live countdown helps clients understand peak-season pricing.”
“I assign this page to my undergrad class — it's one of the few free tools that correctly pairs each year with both the zodiac animal and the Heavenly Stem element. Solid sexagenary cycle handling.”
