Rabbit Age Calculator
Pick the breed and enter the rabbit's age; the semicircular gauge maps it to human-equivalent age, life stage, and median remaining years. The lifespan band scales with breed — small breeds (Netherland Dwarf, Mini Rex, Holland Lop) live 10-14 years; giants (Flemish, Continental Giant) average 5-8. Guidance follows RWAF and the House Rabbit Society.
Quick Conversion
Formula: months = years x 12
Breed
Most popular pet breed in the US; long ears require weekly cleaning to prevent infection.
Age
Gauge reads Prime adult. Peak years. Confirm pellet share < 20% diet, hay free-fed.

The method — size-scaled aging
yr_1_human = size_factor (dwarf 16 -> giant 22)yr_n_human = size_factor + (n - 1) x mature_rate (4-6 yr/yr)senior_yr = mature + 1.4 x mature_rate (accelerated aging)Worked: 5-year-old Holland Lop (small, size_factor 17, mature_rate 4.5, mature_end_yr 6). Human equivalent = 17 + (5 - 1) x 4.5 = 35 human years — mid-prime adult.

Use the gauge in 5 steps
- Pick the breed. The gauge band scales to the breed's maximum lifespan.
- Enter age in years and months. Months matter for kits and young adults.
- Read the needle position. Sweeps left (kit) to right (max documented lifespan).
- Read the human-equivalent. Below the rabbit-age readout in the gauge center.
- Use the reality-check banner. Stage-specific care recommendations (neuter, vaccine, senior support).
Rabbit aging across breeds: from kit to Methuselah
In 2026, a Holland Lop adopter learns their rabbit is “already 6” and worries the bunny is old. The arc meter reads mid-prime adult at year 6 for a small breed; the worry is premature by 3-5 years. This calculator exists to put breed-specific aging on a clear scale.
Rabbit gerontology lagged dog and cat work by decades. Brewer's 2006 piece in Veterinary Clinics: Exotic Animal Practice consolidated the first peer-reviewed rabbit life-stage framework; the Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWAF, UK) and House Rabbit Society (US) published the longitudinal cohort data that made breed-by-breed lifespan medians honest.
Size scaling dominates rabbit lifespan even more than dog lifespan. Netherland Dwarfs (under 1.5 kg) routinely live 11-15 years; Flemish Giants (6-10 kg) average 6-8. The size factor reflects cardiac strain, joint disease, and pododermatitis (sore hocks) clustering in giant breeds. The senior stage starts at year 4 for giants but not until year 6-7 for dwarfs.
Sexual maturity is uniformly fast — 3-12 months depending on breed. Unspayed females face an 80%+ lifetime risk of uterine adenocarcinoma per RWAF data; neutering at 4-6 months is the largest single lifespan intervention available to rabbit owners. The reality-check banner above surfaces this for young-adult readings.
Verified longevity records: Mick (Berwyn, Illinois, 16 years, Guinness 2019); Flopsy (Tasmania, wild rabbit, 18 years 10 months, 1964); multiple House Rabbit Society register entries at 14-16 years. The Methuselah stage threshold on this gauge corresponds to entries above the documented breed max — exceptional longevity worth publishing.
For breed-aware diet planning, consult RWAF's 80/10/10 framework (hay/veg/pellet) and the House Rabbit Society's diet primer. Hay must be free-fed (Timothy, orchard grass, meadow); pellet share drops from 1/4 cup daily in young adults to 1/8 cup or less in seniors. Vaccination is the modern lifespan frontier. RHDV2 (rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus 2) and myxomatosis vaccines became routine in the UK and EU through the 2010s; the US lagged but added RHDV2 in 2021. Annual boosters are now the RWAF and BVA standard. Unvaccinated outdoor rabbits face 30-90% mortality during regional RHDV2 outbreaks.
The arc-meter visualization on this page (semicircle gauge, breed-scaled lifespan band) was inspired by the analog clinical thermometers used in veterinary triage — readings on a single sweep correlate to a known band. The gauge replaces the “rabbit-years equals seven human-years” rule of thumb that RWAF explicitly rejected in 2019.
Trusted by exotics vets, rabbit foster carers and rescue chairs
“I refer new rabbit clients to this URL during their first wellness exam. The breed-specific lifespan dial makes the Flemish Giant vs Netherland Dwarf conversation honest — they live very different lengths and senior care timing matters.”
“The semicircular gauge layout matches how I explain rabbit aging at adoption events. Cardiac risk flag for giant breeds at year 4 catches problems that families miss until it's clinical.”
“I bookmarked this for boarding intake. The breed-aware life-stage tag tells me which rabbits need senior care setup — heated mats, ramp access, soft-substrate bedding — before they arrive.”
“For surrendered rabbits, this is my onboarding tool. Owners think their 6-year-old Mini Rex is “old” — the dial reads middle-mature and we extend adopter expectations by 4-5 years.”
