A short history of pet astrology
In 2026, the pet astrology category is roughly a $60M/yr publishing and media niche, anchored by Instagram-native readers like Aliza Kelly and the lineage of Linda Goodman whose 1968 "Sun Signs" opened the door. Pet-specific readings began appearing in The Old Farmer's Almanac as early as the 1970s but the modern format — birth date + species + personality reading — is largely a 2010s development driven by social-media share culture.
The Western zodiac itself dates to Babylonian sky-watchers around 600 BCE, formalised by Ptolemy in his Tetrabiblos (around 150 CE). The 12 sun-sign date ranges have been stable for two millennia, although precession of the equinoxes means the constellations the signs reference have drifted slightly. Astrologers continue to use the calendar-fixed signs you see in this calculator, not the astronomical positions.
The Chinese zodiac is at least 2,000 years older. Bronze-age oracle bones reference the 12-animal cycle, and the Han Dynasty (around 200 BCE - 200 CE) standardised it. The traditional explanation — that the Jade Emperor held a race to determine the cycle order, with the rat tricking the ox into first place — appears in Tang Dynasty texts. Each animal is paired with one of five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) on a 60-year cycle.
