Why this calculator exists
In 2026, a typical breeder confirms a mating, opens a paper notebook, scribbles "due July 3" and then forgets that the whelping window is actually six days wide. The result is missed temperature-drop monitoring, scheduling conflicts with the theriogenologist, and missed elective C-sections for brachycephalic breeds. The AVMA publishes the 58-68 day outer range and 63 days as the LH-surge baseline; this calculator turns those numbers into a visual circular calendar with breed-specific tuning.
Canine gestation length has been studied since the 1950s, with modern progesterone-based ovulation timing developed in the 1980s by reproductive specialists at Cornell, UC Davis, and Penn Vet. The 63-day measurement is taken from the LH surge — the hormonal trigger for ovulation — not from the day of the tie. Because sperm survive 5-7 days in the reproductive tract, the time from mating to fertilization can vary by up to a week, which is why the visible window spans 60-66 days when measured from mating.
Breed-specific tuning matters more than most breeders realize. Chihuahuas commonly whelp at day 61, 1-2 days earlier than the standard 63-day expectation. Great Danes and other giant breeds with large litters often whelp at day 62 due to litter-volume pressure. French Bulldogs and English Bulldogs almost always require C-section delivery (80-92% rates) due to narrow pelvis and brachycephalic skull mismatch — elective C-section scheduling at day 60-61 prevents distress for the dam and pups.
The pre-whelp temperature drop is the single most reliable predictor of labor. Beginning day 58, take the dam's rectal temperature twice daily. The normal range is 100.5-102°F. When temperature drops below 99°F (often 98-98.5°F) labor will start within 12-24 hours in 90%+ of cases. The drop occurs as progesterone falls and the dam's body releases relaxin and oxytocin. Cornell's Riney Canine Health Center publishes this protocol for breeders.
For higher precision than ±3 days, progesterone-timed mating is the gold standard. A theriogenologist measures serum progesterone over the heat cycle; the LH surge happens when progesterone reaches 4-10 ng/mL, and ovulation follows 48 hours later with eggs maturing for fertilization 2-3 days after that. Counting 63 days from the LH surge gives ±1-2 days accuracy. Most pet breeders do not progesterone-test, so the 60-66 day window from mating is the practical standard.
