Why Cubic Metres Run the World
The cubic metre (m³) is the official SI (International System of Units) unit of volume — adopted by every country on the planet for scientific, engineering, construction and trade work, with the singular exception of the United States. From a ready-mix concrete order in Birmingham to a topsoil delivery in Brisbane, from sea-freight container loadings in Rotterdam to municipal water billing in Mumbai, the m³ is the language of volume.
The unit is exquisitely elegant: 1 m³ equals exactly 1,000 litres, which is exactly 1,000 kg of fresh water at 4 °C — meaning one cubic metre of water is one metric tonne, by definition. This direct relationship between length, volume and mass is what makes the metric system so powerful for engineers, builders and freight forwarders. There are no awkward 27-to-1 conversions like the imperial cubic-yard system; no 7.48 gallons per cubic foot to memorise; no fluid-versus-dry gallon distinctions to trip over. In international construction practice, ready-mix concrete is sold and delivered in m³, structural fill is specified in m³, excavation quantities are tendered in m³, and bills of quantities (BoQs) in the UK, EU, Australia, India, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa all express volumes in cubic metres. In freight, CBM (cubic metres) is the universal volumetric currency: sea freight is billed per CBM or per tonne (whichever is greater), and air freight uses a volumetric divisor of 167 kg per CBM to compute chargeable weight.

Always measure twice, calculate once — small dimension errors get cubed in volume calculations. A 5 % error per dimension compounds to ~16 % in the final m³.

A standard 20-ft (TEU) shipping container has an internal volume of approximately 33 m³ (1,170 ft³), while a 40-ft (FEU) container holds about 67 m³ (2,390 ft³). A 40-ft High Cube container reaches roughly 76 m³. These figures are the nominal interior capacity; usable cargo volume is typically 5–10 % less due to packing inefficiency, pallet footprints and load restraints.
How do I calculate the cubic meters of a swimming pool?+
For a rectangular pool, multiply length × width × average depth in meters. An 8 m × 4 m pool with a 1.5 m average depth holds 8 × 4 × 1.5 = 48 m³ = 48,000 litres of water. For pools with sloping floors, use the average of the shallow and deep end depths. Round pools use the cylinder formula: π × r² × depth.
How many litres are in a cubic meter?+
Exactly 1,000 litres. The litre is defined as 1 cubic decimeter (1 dm³), and there are 1,000 dm³ in 1 m³. This makes m³-to-litre conversion the cleanest in the metric system: simply multiply by 1,000. So 2.5 m³ = 2,500 L, and 0.75 m³ = 750 L.
How do I convert cubic meters to cubic feet?+
