Pro Tips for Accurate Volume Estimating
- · Measure interior dimensions, not exterior. A 24 in × 12 in × 16 in "20 gallon" aquarium is the GLASS-to-GLASS interior. Add 1/2 in to each dimension if you measured the outside.
- · Subtract air space and obstructions. Fuel cells, water tanks, and shipping containers never fill 100% — figure 85-95% usable capacity for fluids and 75-90% for irregular packing.
- · Use decimal inches for precision. 1/16 in = 0.0625, 1/8 in = 0.125, 1/4 in = 0.25. Avoid mixed-fraction entry to keep math clean.
